CRIME DRAMA WALK-THROUGH

IF YOU'RE A FAN OF CRIME DRAMAS, YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE, HERE I TAKE YOU THROUGH ALL THE BEST CRIME DRAMAS THAT ARE EXCLUSIVE TO NETFLIX

Narcos

We begin in Columbia…

Perhaps one of the most popular and known Netflix original shows, Narcos follows the rise of Columbian drug baron Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s attempts to bring him down.

Promising to be a lot closer to true events than the Benicio Del-Toro’s Escobar: Paradise Lost, the series weaves together several plot strands in a series that is as gripping as it is brutal.

Narcos is a show that the more you pay attention, the more you get out of it. This makes it worth revisiting again and again. The inclusion of genuine footage of Escobar and Columbia in the 80s reminds us that this really did happen, and you need it because it’s almost too crazy to be believed.

Ozark

Now to Missouri…

Jason Bateman directs and stars in this darkly comedic crime drama, Ozark. Marty Byrd (Bateman) launders money for a drug cartel through his financial services firm, but his partner, Bruce, is stealing from the mob. Bruce is murdered and Marty negotiates his life by promising to launder money in the rural Ozarks, where they can dodge the FBI.

This is something completely different for Bateman, who is normally in comedic roles, but he pulls it off fantastically. His comedic talent shine through in the moments of black comedy woven into the otherwise serious programme. Laura Linney is also fantastic as his unfaithful, Wendy.

For fans of black comedies and crime dramas, Ozark is perfect.

The Sinner

Extremely underrated…

I had never heard of this programme before, but I decided to give it a watch when bored one night, and it was shockingly gripping.

The Sinneris about Cora Tannetti, a woman who inexplicably stabs a man who she’s never met before to death. She doesn’t know why, and confesses instantly.

It follows Cora (Jessica Biel) and detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) as they try to piece together her past to find out why she would murder someone she doesn’t know.

It is extremely well pieced together and the plot twists and reveals are surprising and clever.

Mindhunter

Another true story…

Mindhunter follows the story of the man who founded the craft of criminal profiling.

It is based on the story of John Douglas, and is adapted from his book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. Although in the series Douglas’ name is changed to Holden Ford (played by Jonathan Groff).

This is not an action packed detective series, but one about talking and thinking. The bulk of it is Ford both interviewing serial killers and convincing the FBI what he is doing is worthwhile.

The series is a slow-burn, but having the patience to let the story grip you will be extremely satisfying and rewarding.

Seven Seconds

Racial Tensions run high…

When a newbie police officer accidentally runs over a young African-American boy, he is faced with the decision of whether to help him or leave him. It’s the result of this decision that creates the 10-hour crime drama Seven Seconds.

With strong performances from the cast, the series balances racial tensions and political commentary with a gripping drama well. The court case act towards the end of the series is a personal highlight, but the beauty of the programme is in its portrait of racial politics.

Bloodline

And finally, a family drama with a twist…

Bloodline follows the seemingly idyllic life of Florida residents, the Rayburn’s. But when the black sheep of the family, Danny (Ben Mendelsohn) returns, dark family secrets emerge, which shows that perhaps the family isn’t as idyllic as previously though.

The series boasts an impressive cast with Sam Shephard, Sissy Spacek and Kyle Chandler on board.

The series perfectly blends a family drama with the punch of a dark, crime thriller.

Although it is soon reaching the end of its run, Bloodline is one of Netflix’s best.
